Softball Sweeps Flames in Thursday Doubleheader

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against the College of Saint Mary Flames on Thursday, winning 9-1 and 11-3. The Spires are now 18-15 on the season and 1-7 in the KCAC.

 

Game One

The Spires struck first in game one as Alexis McDaniel scored on an error to give USM the early lead. The Spires capitalized the following inning with an RBI single by Briana Solis that drove in Jessica Strandlund. After the Flames responded in the third inning to make the score 2-1, it was all Spires for the rest of the game. An offensive explosion in the fourth inning, highlighted by Natalie Bruce and Megan Brinkman's RBIs, propelled USM to a nine-run inning. This was all Saint Mary needed to win game one in five innings, 9-1. Solis went three for three on the day with two RBIs and a run scored while getting the win in the circle.

 

Game Two

Saint Mary got themselves in a hole in game two as the Flames jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. However, the Spires were able to respond with two runs in the bottom of the first, thanks to RBIs by Sadie McWilliams and Megan Brinkman to make the score 3-2. Later, a five-run third inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by Allyson Dias to give USM the 7-3 lead. After holding the Flames scoreless through the next two innings, Abigail Kudym hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning to extend the Spire lead. Dias then put an exclamation mark on game two with an RBI single that scored Delaney Hess to give USM the 11-3 win. Dias went three for four from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Allie Cox improved her pitching record to in the circle.
