Saint Mary Sweeps Bethel in Regular Season Finale

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Bethel College today for their season finale, winning game one (8-3) and game two (6-3).

 

Game One

The first game of the doubleheader started with Bethel taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Saint Mary responded well in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs off of the bats of Natalie Bruce, Allie Cox, Briana Solis, and Ally Dias. 

 

The Spires then capitalized in the second as Alexis McDaniel scored on an error by the Threshers to extend their lead. Delaney Hess then put an exclamation mark on the game in the sixth with her RBI double to cap off a three-run inning. This allowed USM to roll to an 8-2 win. Cox went two for four at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

 

Game Two

Saint Mary picked up right where they left off in game two after the Threshers gained a 1-0 lead. RBI singles by Sadie McWilliams and Hess gave USM the lead in the bottom half of the inning. This momentum carried into the second inning as Alexis McDaniel hit an RBI single and scored on an error to extend the Spire lead to 4-1. 

 

Later in the third, Tatiana Halupa hit an RBI double that knocked in Bruce and Hess. The Spires allowed just two more runs late in the seventh to make the final score 6-3, completing the sweep. Sadie McWilliams went two for three from the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.

 

The Spires finished the season winning five out of their last six games, wrapping up with a 24-25 overall record and a 7-17 record in the KCAC.
