Softball Wins Game Two in Doubleheader Against OKWU

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles to open conference play on Tuesday, resulting in a 6-3 loss and a 5-2 win. The Spires are now 12-12 overall and begin KCAC play with a 1-1 record. 

 

Game One

Desarae Chavez started the day in the circle for Saint Mary, throwing nearly the entire game and giving up six runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The Spires manufactured their first run of the game after Megan Brinkman dropped a sacrifice bunt to drive in Audrey Spellman. Sadie McWilliams followed in the second inning with an RBI double to center field to make the score 2-0. Chavez held the Eagles scoreless through three innings, but in the top of the fourth quarter, Oklahoma Wesleyan took the lead after a three-run homer to make it a 3-2 ball game. The Spires answered in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI double from Spellman to tie the game at three. In extra innings, the Eagles got two runs across to take a two-run lead. Saint Mary was not able to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth and fell 5-3. 

 

Game Two

Allie Cox was chosen as the starter in game two; she went all seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits with a strikeout for her fifth win of the season. Alexis McDaniel hit her eighth home run of the year in the bottom of the third to give Saint Mary an early two-run lead. Oklahoma Wesleyan hit a homer of their own in the following frame to tie the game at two runs apiece. McWilliams hit her second RBI double of the day, driving in two runs to take a 4-2 lead. Chavez came in to pinch-hit later in the inning and drove in one more run to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.
