Softball Sweeps Swedes on Senior Day

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Bethany College for a doubleheader on Saturday, resulting in both 5-2 and 6-1 wins. The Spires are now 25-17 overall and 14-6 in conference play.

 

Game One

The Spires kicked off game one with a robust offensive display in the bottom of the first inning, sparked by a leadoff single from Audrey Spellman. This was swiftly followed by a stolen base and a triple Jessica Strandlund, resulting in two runs. Saint Mary then extended their lead with another run in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to a triple from Spellman. The Spires continued a brilliant offensive display, widening the gap in the bottom of the third inning with Abigail Kudym's two-RBI double. Bethany fought back in the top of the fourth inning, making it a 5-2 ball game. Despite both teams' efforts in subsequent innings, neither could add more runs. Saint Mary emerged victorious in game one with a final score of 5-2 against the Swedes.

 

Game Two

The second matchup saw another dominant performance by the Spires. Starting pitcher Desarae Chavez retired the Swedes in order to start the first inning. The Spires capitalized in the bottom half of the first, with a decisive home run hit by Alexis McDaniel, securing the first run for Saint Mary. The Spires put two more runners on but could not bring them in, entering the second with a 1-0 lead. The Swedes were able to bounce back and tie the score 1-1 in the second inning. Saint Mary pulled ahead again in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Spellman, bringing in Alexis Hughes. The Swedes struggled to respond in the following innings, being held scoreless throughout the game. Meanwhile, Saint Mary extended their lead in the bottom of the third with another homer by McDaniel, adding another run. Saint Mary continued to dominate, scoring additional runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, expanding their lead to 5-1. Bethany's efforts in the remaining innings of the game fell short as they failed to score again, giving the Spires a 6-1 game-two win.

Saint Mary will host the Ottawa Braves for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
