Women's Basketball Cruises to 68-36 Win Over Southwestern

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against the Southwestern Mound builders Tuesday night, resulting in a 68-36 win. The Spires are now 4-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play, heading into a matchup with Pittsburg State University Wednesday night.

The first half started with Alex Specht and Jerrica Johnson giving the Spires the early 7-2 lead. The Builders got on the board with a pair of quick scores, but as the quarter went on, the Spires started to pull away. With fifty seconds left in the quarter, Demi Aamold hit a three to give Saint Mary the 16-6 lead heading into the second quarter. Tanea Sims got things going for USM to start the second quarter with her layup. Stout defensive play kept the Builders in check as the Spires kicked up the offensive production after Addison Penegar hit a three-pointer to extend the Spire's lead to 21-8. Mary Olsen's late layup gave the Spires the 33-16 lead heading into halftime.

Sims hit a three-pointer to get things started for the Spires in the second half. Stout defensive play by Saint Mary continued to frustrate Southwestern as the quarter came to an end with Saint Mary on top 51-29. The Spires extended their lead to start the fourth quarter with Penegar, Sims, and Daija Planas all combining for 13 points. This gave the Spires all they needed to close out the game for the win, 68-36.

Sims and Johnson combined for 31 points, while Olson had 11 rebounds on the night.
