Spires Fall to Bulldogs in Close 68-61 Loss

McPherson, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played the McPherson Bulldogs Monday, resulting in a 68-61 loss. The Spires are now 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the KCAC.

Saint Mary took an early lead over the Bulldogs after Jerrica Johnson and Alanis Delgado combined for three three-pointers, giving the Spires a 12-4 lead. Daija Planas made her free throws to make the score 20-14 to end the first quarter. Saint Mary had a six-point run in the second quarter. McPherson answered with a scoring run of their own to end the half to tie things up at 29-29.

Shelby Salter scored the first five points of the second half for the Spires, and Paige Pendley made two free throws to keep the score tied 36-36. Johnson then scored eight of the next eleven points for Saint Mary. However, McPherson continued to score as well and held a 48-46 lead over the Spires. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs continued their offensive output going on another extended scoring run to take a nine-point lead over Saint Mary. The Spires attempted to get back into the game by drawing fouls and making free throws, but they were unable to complete the comeback and ended up losing 68-61.
