Johnson Has 13 in Big Win Over Avila

Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against the Avila University Eagles Tuesday, resulting in a 71-35 win. The Spires are now 7-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Paige Pendley and Alanis Delgado helped the Spires go on a 12-0 scoring run to begin the game. Saint Mary continued to press offensively as Rebecca Gilpin, Kaylani Hoskin, and Shelby Salter gave the Spires a 21-4 lead to end the opening quarter. The second quarter was no different from the first, with the Spires keeping up the scoring. Jerrica Johnson and Tanea Sims hit shots to make the score 35-10 with two minutes left. The Eagles scored five late points of the half to give USM a 25-point lead heading into halftime.

The Spires picked up right where they left off in the third quarter as Pendley and Demi Aamold hit threes to extend the Saint Mary lead. Strong defensive play held the Eagles to six points in the third quarter. The Spires made it difficult for Avila to get anything going in the fourth quarter as they continued with the offensive attack and played with sound defense. Saint Mary dominated from start to finish for the 71-35 victory. Johnson led the Spires with 13 points, and the team finished with a 44.8 shooting percentage.
