Women's Basketball Uses Big Third Quarter to Get Win Over York

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against the York Panthers, resulting in a 74-45 win. The Spires are now 11-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

Saint Mary took an early 5-0 lead to start the game with a three-pointer from Paige Pendley and a layup from Tanea Sims. The Spires then built on their early lead with layups by Daija Planas and Jerrica Johnson to take a 14-5. York responded with a 7-2 run to close the first quarter out, trailing Saint Mary 21-15. As the second quarter started, Demi Aamold hit a three to get things started offensively for the Spires. York responded with a 6-2 run to cut the USM lead to 26-21. Shelby Salter helped the Spire offense with back-to-back buckets to give the momentum back to Saint Mary. The Spires then went on an 8-2 run to end the half, giving USM the 39-25 lead going into halftime.

As the third quarter began, Alanis Delgado, Kaylani Hoskin, and Pendley all helped USM go on an 8-0 run. Stout defensive play and efficient scoring propelled Saint Mary to a 27-point lead. The Spires did not relent in the fourth quarter either, with Marissa Covington and Jaylee Levario helping extend the Saint Mary lead with their layups. This was all the Spires needed as they ran away with a 74-45 win. Aamold led the way for Saint Mary on offense scoring 13 points, while Pendley had eight rebounds.
