Women's Basketball Falls to Bethany

Lindsborg, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team played against Bethany College tonight, resulting in a 62-57 loss. The Spires are now 13-10 overall and 9-8 in conference play.

Bethany opened the game with a 10-1 run to capture momentum. Demi Aamold then came in and scored five straight points for Saint Mary to bring them back into the game. Alanis Delgado hit a three-pointer with under two minutes to go in the first quarter to make the score 22-13. Paige Pendley and Kaylani Hoskin pulled the Spires within five points with their buckets midway through the second quarter, but Bethany went on a run to take a 29-23 lead heading into halftime.

The Spires started the second half strong, with Daija Planas and Tanea Sims scoring back-to-back jumpers to cut the Swede lead to one. Later, Sims layup gave Saint Mary their first lead since the opening minutes making the score 37-36. However, the Swedes went on another run to take the lead back 48-41 to close the quarter. Strong defense by both teams highlighted the fourth quarter, with few shots being made. With under five minutes left in the game, Rebecca Gilpin nailed a three to cut Bethany's lead to six. The Spires fought back to trail 57-55 with 1:43 left to play, but free throws eventually propelled Bethany to the 62-57 win. Aamold and Sims had ten points apiece tonight, leading the way for Saint Mary, while Alex Specht had ten rebounds on the night.
