Women's Basketball Has Historic Win Over York

York, Neb.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team traveled to play the York Panthers on Wednesday, resulting in a 91-64 win. They also broke the single-game team record for three-point shots made with 19. The Spires are now 15-4 overall and 12-1 in conference play. 

 

Saint Mary jumped out to an early four-point lead with Tanea Sims and Alyche Brown hitting jump shots. Rebecca Gilpin then hit two threes; Keely Barnard and Alanis Delgado also made threes and began to expand their lead. The Spires outscored the Panthers by 12 in the first quarter, giving them a comfortable lead that was protected the entire game. 

 

Sims and Brown again helped Saint Mary get things going to open the second quarter. After that, Demi Aamold and Delgado made threes to give the Spires a 17-point lead with seven minutes left. A lull in scoring for Saint Mary allowed York to pull within 11 points under the two-minute mark. Delgado hit her third three of the night, and Aamold followed with a jump shot to make it a 47-43 game headed into the break. 

 

The Spires continued to put offensive pressure on the Panthers like they had in the first half. Delgado hit four more threes to help outscore York by 12 throughout the quarter. Gilpin hit one more three with 46 seconds left to put USM over the 70-point mark heading into the fourth quarter. Sims again opened the scoring for Saint Mary, while Delgado and Gilpin continued hitting threes to keep the Panthers on their heels. Katelynn Ostronic hit five free throws down the stretch, giving Saint Mary the 91-64 win.
