Spires Hold on for Win Over Eagles

Bartlesville, Okla.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles on Saturday, resulting in a 75-67 win. The Spires have an overall record of 18-4 and a KCAC record of 15-1.

 

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with threes by Alanis Delgado and Jaylee Levario to keep the Spires in it. Later, Tanea Sims, Demi Aamold, and Katelynn Ostronic hit jump shots to retake the offensive momentum, ending the first quarter with a 22-14 lead.

 

Heading into the second quarter, Delgado made a three-pointer to extend the lead to 11. The Eagles did not back down and ended up bringing the score down to two with five minutes left in the 1st half. With a combination of nine points by Delgado and Levario, the Spires went into the half leading the game 38-34.

 

The Spires came into the second half looking to find their offensive momentum. A made layup by Sims and a three-pointer by Paige Pendley extended the lead to nine. As Saint Mary pushed their lead up to ten, the Eagles were not backing down, bringing the game closer and closer, trying to take the lead. However, the Eagles could not sustain the pressure, and the Spires sealed the game with two free throws.

 

Alanis Delgado led the team with 27 points, breaking the all-time career three-point record. Tanea Sims recorded yet another double-double with 16 points and 20 rebounds, also breaking a record for most rebounds in a single game.
