Spires Win Second Straight Game After Yingling's Goal

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Soccer team hosted the Avila Eagles on Wednesday, resulting in a 2-0 win. The Spires are now 2-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.

Saint Mary put pressure on the Avila goalkeeper often in the game's early stages with multiple corner kicks and shots on goal. A save by Marisol Vargas in the first ten minutes set the tone for the rest of the game, leading to a clean sheet for the Spire's defense. Kate Erpelding got USM on the board with 25 minutes left in the first half.

In an effort to tie the game up at 1-1, Avila went on the offensive, taking four shots in the first ten minutes of the second half. The Spires countered after a foul by Avila gave Saint Mary a set piece in the Eagle's half of the field. Erin Walden sent the ball in and found Jaidyn Yingling, who poked the ball over the ball over Avila's goalie to take a 2-0 lead. Yingling's goal and tough defense gave the Spires a 2-0 win over the Eagles. Vargas recorded six saves on the day to help her team get the clean sheet.
