Volleyball Wins in Four Sets Over Braves

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team hosted the Ottawa Braves on Wednesday, resulting in a 3-1 win. The Spires are now 19-9 and have a 7-5 record in the KCAC.

 

The Spires came out strong in the first set. Saint Mary went on a 9-2 run led by the attack of Keagan Shockley and Ainsley Gardner. The Spires followed that with an equally impressive 10-3 run, wrapping up the first set with a 25-13 final score.

 

Saint Mary continued to press offensively in the second set, taking an early 10-6. Shockley and Rylee Kenitzer led the team in scoring during the set. The Spires capitalized on numerous Brave errors and never looked back, ending on a 9-3 run and winning 25-15.

 

The Spires started out the third set the same way as the previous two, but this time the Braves answered. Ottawa got back in the game, going on a 9-0 run to win 25-23.

 

The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair, but the Spires won the competitive set 25-23. Devyn Ford came up huge in the final set with a timely block.

 

The Spires were led by Shockley, Knitzer, and Madison Folsom, as they each had over ten kills on the night. Abby Hairell and Courtney Standley split the facilitating duties, recording over 20 assists. Renata Dominguez and Devyn Ford each had two blocks, including a few crucial ones down the stretch.

The Spires will conclude the season on the road against Sterling College at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Sterling, Kansas.
