Women's Wrestling Takes Third At KCAC Team Duals

York, Nebraska.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Wrestling team competed in the KCAC team dual tournament this Saturday, resulting in a third-place finish. The Spires now have a team dual record of 6-3.

Pool Play

The Spires were put into group C and against Doane, the University of Jamestown, and Morningside to open the tournament. Saint Mary opened pool play with a nail-biting close win against Doane. Alisha Van Scoy, Allison King, and Ariana Mercado had three consecutive wins to give the Spires a fighting chance. Then Amelia Frounfelter got a win by fall to close the door on the Tigers.

In round two against Morningside, Alexsys Jacquez got her second win of the day. Down the stretch, USM won five straight matches, including two by fall from Lesley Sandoval and Rebekah Koolstra. Saint Mary made quick work of the Mustangs, winning 30-10.

The Spires pulled out another close victory to finish pool play against Jamestown. After two early forfeits, Jacquez got her third win of the day, wrestling up a weight class and winning via technical fall. Two losses in the 130-pound weight classes brought the Jimmies within striking distance of the Spires. However, Mercado secured her third win via fall of the day, and Froundfelter had another win to give Saint Mary a safe 23-16 lead, guaranteeing a win for the Spires.

Gold Bracket

After going a perfect 3-0 in pool play, the Spires were then paired with the two other winners of pools A and B. In the first Gold bracket match, the Spires took on Hastings, losing 30-18. Frounfelter and King were able to get wins for Saint Mary late in the dual, but they needed more to overcome the growing Hastings lead. Saint Mary fell to Ottawa 40-8 in their final dual of the weekend. Sandoval and Jacquez were the only two wrestlers to get a win in their respective weight classes against the Braves.
